Sorrento inlay wood art
Sorrento inlay wood art it is actually a decorative composition obtained by cutting, inserting and putting together different coloured pieces of wood to create a design or picture. These pieces are then set into a surface to create a design that is usually level with the surface. The art of handmade inlaid wood work is an old and noble Italian tradition typical of Southern Italy, especially the Sorrento area, and can only be performed by skilled and highly trained artisans whose craft is handed down from generation to generation. The first records of inlaid art go back to the Middle Ages where is was known as “Certosina Woodworks”. During the Italian Renaissance the artisans and their apprentices reached high artistic levels by copying the drawings of the many famous contemporary artists of that era. This age-old craft continues to flourish to the present day. Read more... |
Capodimonte Porcelain
he art of ceramics boasts in Naples a centuries-old tradition. In 1739 Carlo III, king of the two Sicilies, was the first to introduce the first napoletan factory near his royal palace on the hills of Capodimonte. The factory of the Capodimonte Porcellains takes its origin from the marriage betwaeen king Carlo and Maria Amalia Valpurga, daughter of the Elector of Sassonia Federico Augusto and niece of August the Strong, creator of the famous porcellain factory in Meissen. The success of Capodimonte Porcellain is surely due to the quality of the mixture of the soft paste at high feldspathic contents which exhalts the beautiful miniatures made in the point of a brush. The characteristic of the soft paste enables to the cover paint to 'take the decoration up' causing a smooth effect of 'vacuum glass'.. Read more... |
Napoletan Christmas Crib
The Napoletan Crib was born as the representation of the Nativity in 1470 by Alemanno Giovanni and Pietro brothers. This first crib was made up wood life-sized figurines with no accessory which might take peolple's attention off the importance of the holy event they showed. They were solemn images which invited everyone to the piety and prayer. Something changed in the XVI century. In this period we have the first forms of setting with a certain sort of landscape and except the ox and the donkey, some more animals like the dog, the goat and the sheeps, two shepherds and three angels. The structure of the crib is with the cave in the best position rounded by adoring shepherds and angels, then the holy mountain with some more shepherds and flocks and angels in the blue sky who announce the Gospel and the procession of the three wise Men in the distance. Cameo jewelry
A genuine cameo is a carving in relief done on a naturally occurring substance wich contains different coloured layers. The carving must incorporate the contrasting layers in different aspects of the design. The carvings must de bone by hand. Cameo defines the work that has been done, not the material on wich it was done. All shell-cameos must be hand crafted because the shell presents an uneven surface usuitable for a machine-cut engraving. In addition to this, the shell would easly break under ultrasonicsounds. The most suitable shells for the manufacturing of cameos are Cassis Rufa, also known as 'Cornelian Helmet' and Cassis Madagascariensis, generally known as 'Sardonyx Helmet'. The two major styles of engraving are: 'intaglio', where the carving or sculputing is done below, or into, the surface of the stone and 'relief' where the design projects outwards from the stone's background. Limoncello of Sorrento
Limoncello is a lemon liqueur produced in Southern Italy, mainly in the region around the Gulf of Naples, the Sorrentine Peninsula and the coast of Amalfi and islands of Procida, Ischia and Capri, but also in Sicily, Sardinia, Menton in France and the Maltese island of Gozo. It is made from lemon rinds, alcohol, water, and sugar. It is bright yellow in color, sweet and lemony, but not sour since it contains no lemon juice. Unlike many other liqueurs, limoncello is easy and inexpensive to produce, requiring only sugar, water, lemon zest, alcohol, and time to mature. Different varieties of lemon are used to produce different flavors. The variety of lemon used is usually dictated by region, the lemons of Sorrento producing a particularly pleasant limoncello. Limoncello is traditionally served chilled as an after dinner digestivo. Read more... |
